Costs and Processes for CPT, OPT, OPT-STEM and H-1B
CPT (Curricular Practical Training)
Cost: Costs associated with university enrollment or course fees (if any).
Application Process: Students must work with their school's international office to apply. Required documentation typically includes the CPT application form and proof of enrollment.
Filing and Timeline: The timeline varies; students should consult their university for specific processing times.
OPT (Optional Practical Training)
Cost: Application fee (currently $470), biometrics fee (if applicable).
Application Process: Complete Form I-765, gather required documents (like I-20, passport photos), and submit to USCIS.
Filing and Timeline: Processing can take 2-5 months, so apply early. Can't apply earlier than 90 days before graduation.
OPT-STEM Extension
Cost: Application fee (currently $470), biometrics fee (if applicable).
Application Process: File Form I-765 for an extension, including required documentation and proof of eligible STEM degree.
Filing and Timeline: Processing time can take 3-5 months. Apply 90 days before your current OPT ends.
H-1B Visa
Cost:The registration fee as of 2025 is $215, Form-129 fee is $780 or $460(small employers and nonprofits). There might be additional fees that inlude ACWIA fee, fraud prebention and attorney fees.
Application Process: Employer files a Labor Condition Application (LCA) with the Department of Labor, followed by Form I-129 with USCIS.
Filing and Timeline: H-1B applications are typically opened in March. If selected, the earliest employment start date is October 1. Processing times vary; premium processing can expedite the decision.
